Seattle in November: Best Things to Do and Rainy-Day Tours

November is Seattle's wettest month, and the city still works if you book indoors. Plus the Christmas Market from November 20 and Leavenworth from November 27.

Updated 2026-09-26

Early sunset over the Seattle waterfront and Elliott Bay

November changes what is worth booking in Seattle rather than how much there is to do. It is the wettest month of the year, averaging 6.3 inches of rain across about 18 days, the afternoon high settles around 52°F, and once the clocks go back on November 1 the sun sets at about 4:34 p.m. mid-month. Mount Rainier is already operating under winter rules.

If you are arriving earlier in the fall, what to book in Seattle in October covers the month before this one. The city itself holds up well in November, because most of what people come for is indoors. Downtown hotels ran at 63.9% occupancy in November 2025 against 89.2% in July, so you get the Space Needle, Chihuly, the aquarium, MoPOP, Pike Place Market and the underground with far fewer people in them, and rooms cost less.

The month also has two distinct halves. Through the first three weeks, the strongest bookings are the Pike Place food tours, Seattle’s underground, museums, Snoqualmie Falls and Woodinville wine country. From November 20 the Seattle Christmas Market opens at Seattle Center, and from November 27 Leavenworth’s Christmastown begins, with more than half a million lights on daily from Thanksgiving through the end of February. A trip in the last week of November is a different trip from one in the first.

One date to plan around before anything else: Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26 in 2026, and Pike Place Market, the Museum of Flight and the Underground Tour all close that day. Prices below were read on September 26, 2026, and move with the date you pick.

Other experiences you might enjoy

November days run through Pike Place Market, Pioneer Square and Seattle Center. Out of town: Snoqualmie Falls, Woodinville and, from late November, Leavenworth.

Pike Place Market food tours: the best all-weather booking

Seattle rain is a lot easier to tolerate when the next stop is chowder.

The Pike Place Market Chef-Guided Food Tour costs from $75, rates 4.9 from 1,117 reviews on GetYourGuide, and runs about two hours of tastings through the market. The same tour on Viator, the Chef Guided Food Tour of Pike Place Market, carries a far longer record at 4.9 from 4,669 reviews. Stops vary by day and can include Pike Place Chowder, Beecher’s Handmade Cheese and local chocolate makers.

You are not indoors for every minute, but the market has extensive covered areas and the tour keeps moving between food businesses rather than standing anywhere in the rain.

November suits it in a way July does not. In summer Pike Place is something you edge through sideways; in November it becomes a place you can spend two hours in. Then walk on to the Seattle Art Museum or the waterfront, with no need for a mountain on the horizon.

A food tour also solves the standard Pike Place problem. Without a guide, most visitors photograph the sign, watch the fish throwing, and leave without finding out which stalls were worth the money. If the chef-guided departures do not fit your day, the Pike Place Market Guided Tasting Tour runs two hours from $68.99 and rates 4.8 from 223 reviews. Our Pike Place Market guide covers the free route round the market if you would rather not book either — and remember the market closes on Thanksgiving.

Seattle’s underground: the easiest rainy hour

If the forecast shows steady rain, this is the least complicated booking in the city.

The Guided Underground Walking Tour explores surviving passageways beneath Pioneer Square, where parts of Seattle’s 1890s street level are still there under the modern city. It runs about an hour from $31 and rates 4.6 from 2,620 reviews. On Viator the same tour, Beneath The Streets, rates 4.7 from 9,290 reviews, which makes it one of the most heavily reviewed activities in Seattle.

November suits it because visibility is irrelevant. It does not matter whether Mount Rainier is behind cloud or Elliott Bay is grey; the attraction is under the pavement. You do walk above ground between the underground sections, so bring a jacket — but set against a full day of exposed sightseeing it is very forgiving.

It takes an hour, it is close to the waterfront and Pike Place, and the darker, wetter weather arguably suits it. Two companies run underground tours through different tunnels, and which Seattle Underground tour to book puts them side by side. This one also closes on Thanksgiving.

Space Needle and Chihuly: the classic pair, and why the combination matters

An observation deck is more weather-sensitive than an underground tour, which is exactly why the combination ticket makes more sense in November than the deck on its own.

The Space Needle and Chihuly Garden and Glass Ticket costs from $77.98, rates 4.7 from 2,761 reviews, and covers both attractions in about three hours. The Space Needle gives you the classic view when visibility allows. Chihuly gives you something worth the money when the skyline has disappeared.

So take the deck first if you get a clear window. If the weather is poor, spend longer inside Chihuly and treat the observation level as a view of the city below rather than a search for the mountain. Both sit at Seattle Center, alongside the Christmas Market from November 20, which makes an easy afternoon-into-evening. Our Space Needle tickets guide explains the Day/Night ticket and the timed-entry rules.

The Viator combination ticket that older guides link to no longer resolves as a product, so this is the one to book.

Wine and Snoqualmie Falls: the best November day out of the city

If you want to leave Seattle in November, the waterfall-and-Woodinville combination is the most sensible thing on the list.

The Seattle Wine and Snoqualmie Falls Highlights Tour runs about six hours from $140 and rates 4.5 from 1,283 reviews, normally taking in at least two wineries alongside the falls.

November gives Snoqualmie an advantage over most mountain attractions: fall rain raises the river, and the operator’s own high-water account describes the flow at 151% of normal after 3.3 inches of rain, with mist heavy enough to soak people on the lower observation deck. That is the trip improving, not degrading.

The winery half means a cold or drizzly afternoon does not cost you the day, and nobody has to drive afterward.

Check what the price includes. Wine tastings and lunch may be bought separately depending on the booking option, so do not assume every pour is covered by the headline figure. Snoqualmie Falls in October compares all four falls tours in detail, and most of it holds for November too. If the wine matters more than the waterfall, the best wine tours from Seattle in fall compares this tour with a Woodinville-only day.

Snoqualmie Falls without the wine

If wine is beside the point for your group, take the shorter Seattle City and Snoqualmie Falls Half-Day Guided Tour instead: four hours from $94, rated 4.9 from 1,480 reviews. On GetYourGuide, the Snoqualmie Falls and Twin Falls Guided Tour costs from $75 and rates 4.9 from 235 reviews.

The November advantage is the same either way. Low cloud can hide Mount Rainier completely; it cannot hide a 270-foot waterfall when you are standing next to it. The falls are open sunrise to sunset every day of the year and free to see.

A half-day format also leaves the afternoon for something indoors, which matters when the sun sets before five. That makes it the better choice for families and for anyone with only two or three days in the city.

Leavenworth: the day trip that only exists from November 27

Leavenworth becomes a genuinely different proposition at the end of November.

The Bavarian-themed mountain town is pleasant year-round, but the Christmas season is what justifies an eight-to-nine-hour round trip. For 2026, Christmastown runs November 27 through December 24, and the town’s half-million-plus lights are on every day from Thanksgiving through the end of February, roughly 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.

So a visitor arriving in Seattle in the last week of November can book something that was not really available a fortnight earlier.

The Leavenworth Exclusive Tour from Seattle costs from $195 and rates 4.7 from 557 reviews, running eight to nine hours with transport from the city, scenic driving through the Cascades, free time in town and additional stops such as Deception Falls depending on conditions. The itinerary gives roughly two hours of free time in Leavenworth, which is enough to walk the center, eat and take photographs.

Will the tour still be in town after dark?

This is the question that decides whether a Christmas trip works, and it is easy to miss.

The lights are on all day through the Christmas period, but the town looks dramatically more festive after dusk — and in late November, dusk in the Cascades comes early. Before you book a tour specifically for the Christmas atmosphere, read the departure and return times and work out whether you will actually be in Leavenworth after dark. Not every tour marketed as a Leavenworth day trip is arranged around the lights.

Our guide to Seattle to Leavenworth Christmas tours compares every day tour by how long it gives you in town and whether it stays after dark.

Seattle Christmas Market: holiday atmosphere without the drive

You do not have to cross the Cascades for the first Christmas atmosphere of the season.

The Seattle Christmas Market opens on November 20, 2026, at Seattle Center and runs through December 27. Through the early season, to December 13, the hours are:

  • Monday to Friday: 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Saturday and Sunday: 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.

It is closed on Thanksgiving, November 26, and opens 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Black Friday, November 27. Expect a European-style market: gift stalls, festive food and drink, a carousel, Santa photos, entertainment and photo installations.

This is not a reason to plan a whole trip around November. It is a reason November 20 onward is a better week to arrive than November 5, and it combines neatly with the Space Needle and Chihuly because all three are on the same site. Seattle Center’s Winterfest runs from November 27 to December 31, and Argosy’s Christmas Ship Festival in December sails from November 27 to December 23.

Mount Rainier in November: winter, not late fall

Mount Rainier does not close for November. But November at Paradise is winter.

Every vehicle in the park must carry tire chains from November 1 to May 1, and that includes four-wheel and all-wheel drive. Most park roads close for the season. Winter access toward Paradise runs through the Nisqually Entrance, and the road up from Longmire closes overnight: in typical conditions the gate opens at 9 a.m., the uphill gate closes at 4 p.m., the downhill gate at 5 p.m., and the park asks you to leave Paradise by 4:30 p.m. Gates can open late, close early or stay shut on avalanche and weather grounds. Sunrise and the Sunrise Road are closed to private vehicles for the rest of the 2026 season because of the Wonderland Complex Fires.

A guided tour is far more attractive than self-driving here if you are not used to mountain winter conditions, and our guide to Mount Rainier in winter compares the tours that include snowshoes. The Mount Rainier National Park Guided Tour costs from $187.70 and rates 4.9 from 516 reviews, with a minimum age of five; the Mt. Rainier National Park Small Group In-Depth Tour is cheaper at $148 and rates 4.6 from 391 reviews. On Viator, the Mt. Rainier Day Tour from Seattle runs from $175.15 and rates 4.9 from 2,199 reviews.

No tour controls the weather. Stops can change, Paradise access can be delayed or unavailable, and cloud can hide the mountain entirely. If you have one free day and simply want scenery outside the city, take Snoqualmie Falls. If snowy Mount Rainier is a real priority and a flexible itinerary is fine with you, a winter day tour can be worth it. Our day trips from Seattle guide covers the arithmetic of driving yourself.

Is November a good time to visit Seattle?

Yes, but not for July’s reasons.

It suits you if you prefer lower visitor numbers, like food, museums and city history, do not mind rain, want a waterfall or wine-country day trip, or are arriving from November 20 onward for the start of the Christmas season. It is a poor fit if your trip depends on guaranteed views of Mount Rainier, long dry hiking days, island-hopping in sunshine, or full days outdoors.

The answer is a mixed-weather itinerary: never three consecutive days where every activity needs a clear horizon.

How rainy is Seattle in November?

November is the wettest month of the year here, averaging 6.3 inches of rain across about 18 days. July, for comparison, averages 0.6 inches over about five.

The rainfall total is not the travel problem, though. What a visitor notices is the combination: wet weather more days than not, grey skies, a sunset at 4:34 p.m. mid-month, poor mountain visibility and temperatures that drop quickly once it is dark.

So alternate. Put the indoor and semi-covered experiences on consecutive days and pick one carefully chosen outdoor day trip, rather than three in a row that all need luck.

What to do in Seattle when it rains in November

Our order:

  1. The Guided Underground Walking Tour — an hour that does not care about the sky
  2. A Pike Place Market food tour — food, history and covered market halls
  3. Chihuly Garden and Glass — the strongest indoor attraction in the city, easy to pair with the Space Needle
  4. Museums — MoPOP, the Seattle Art Museum and the Museum of Flight all become much more useful once a full outdoor day is off the table
  5. A Woodinville wine tour — a better November day trip than forcing a mountain panorama through low cloud

If you are visiting several of these, check whether a pass pays for itself: the Seattle CityPASS costs $139, rates 4.7 from 881 reviews, and covers five attractions, most of them indoors, across nine consecutive days. Our guide to whether the Seattle CityPASS is worth it does the sums.

Is Pike Place Market worth visiting in November?

Yes. Pike Place is not a summer attraction that limps through winter.

You lose some of the warm-weather atmosphere and gain a market that fits the weather: time under cover, hot food and coffee, shopping, and moving between indoor and semi-covered areas. This is one place where a grey day does not make the place worse, only different.

The one thing to watch is the date. The market closes on Thanksgiving, Thursday November 26 in 2026.

Is Snoqualmie Falls worth visiting in November?

Arguably more than most visitors expect. November rain raises the river, and the falls hold up under grey skies because nothing about them is on the horizon.

Bring proper waterproof clothing and shoes with grip, particularly if you plan to walk down to the lower viewpoint — the operator’s own warning is that the return is like climbing a 30-story building.

The difference from Mount Rainier is the whole point. At Snoqualmie, cloud is atmosphere. At Mount Rainier, cloud can hide the thing you spent three hours driving toward. That is why Snoqualmie is the default November nature trip for a first-time visitor.

Is Leavenworth worth visiting in early November?

It can be a pleasant day, but if Christmas is the reason you are going, wait for the end of the month.

The 2026 Christmastown program begins November 27. The lights come on from Thanksgiving and stay on daily through February. So November 10 and November 29 are genuinely different trips to the same town: one is a Bavarian-themed village in the mountains, the other is a Christmas destination with half a million lights.

For a general mountain-town visit, either works. For the Christmas trip, the last week is the one.

Seattle in early November against late November

November 1 to 19

Lean on the Pike Place food tours, the underground, Snoqualmie Falls, Woodinville, the Space Needle and Chihuly combination, and the museums. Mount Rainier is possible when conditions allow. Note that whale watching from Pier 69 had dropped to weekend departures by November in 2026 and finished on November 15.

November 20 to 26

The Seattle Christmas Market is open, so holiday content starts working without leaving the city. Thanksgiving falls on November 26, and Pike Place Market, the Museum of Flight and the Underground Tour all close that day.

November 27 onward

This is when Leavenworth becomes the recommendation. Christmastown has begun, the lights are on, Winterfest and the Christmas Ship Festival both start, and the city has moved decisively into the holiday season. It is also the busiest stretch of the month.

What to wear in Seattle in November

Prioritize waterproofing over serious cold-weather gear. Downtown, an average high of 52°F and a low of 41°F is jacket weather, not expedition weather.

For the city: a waterproof jacket with a hood, comfortable water-resistant shoes, warm layers, an umbrella if you like using one, and a bag that copes with rain.

For Snoqualmie Falls: shoes with grip, a warmer outer layer and a waterproof shell. Skip the umbrella at the falls, where wind and spray make it a liability.

For Mount Rainier or Leavenworth: proper winter layers, a hat and gloves, and footwear for cold and possibly snowy ground. The common mistake is dressing for downtown and assuming the same clothes work in the mountains.

A three-day November itinerary

Day one, Pike Place and Seattle Center

Start with the Pike Place Market food tour. Spend the afternoon at Seattle Center with Chihuly Garden and Glass and the Space Needle. From November 20, add the Christmas Market after dark — which, at this time of year, means from about five o’clock.

Day two, Snoqualmie Falls

Families and first-time visitors: the Seattle and Snoqualmie Falls half-day tour. Couples and adult groups: the full-day wine and Snoqualmie Falls version.

Day three, Pioneer Square and a seasonal choice

Take the underground tour in the morning. Then either spend the afternoon in museums and neighborhoods, in early November, or — from November 27 — give the whole day to Leavenworth if the Christmas atmosphere is what you came for.

That shape survives a poor forecast, which is the only real test of a November itinerary. Our one day in Seattle guide works through the same arithmetic on a shorter visit.

Is Seattle crowded in November?

Much quieter than peak summer for most of the month: 63.9% downtown hotel occupancy in November 2025, against 89.2% in July.

The end of the month is the exception, and it has three reasons. The Christmas Market opens November 20. Leavenworth’s Christmastown begins November 27. And the UW Medicine Seattle Marathon runs on Sunday, November 29, 2026, starting at 7 a.m. from Seattle Center and finishing at Pier 66, with related events over the preceding weekend.

So Thanksgiving weekend feels nothing like a quiet mid-November Tuesday. If you are here from November 27 to 29, book timed attractions and tours earlier than you otherwise would.

Is Seattle worth visiting in November?

Yes, if you book November experiences instead of trying to reconstruct a summer trip.

Our booking order:

  1. Pike Place Market Chef-Guided Food Tour — the best all-weather experience in the city
  2. Guided Underground Walking Tour — the easiest rainy hour
  3. Wine and Snoqualmie Falls — the strongest adults-only day out
  4. Seattle City and Snoqualmie Falls Half-Day Tour — for families and short trips
  5. Space Needle and Chihuly — the classic pair, and Chihuly carries a grey day
  6. Leavenworth day trip — move this to the top from November 27 onward
  7. Mount Rainier — only when winter conditions and your priorities justify the uncertainty

November is not Seattle at its most photogenic, and very little of it shuts down. The food and the indoor attractions are as good as they are in July, the waterfalls are better after the rain, Woodinville is a half-hour escape, and by the last third of the month the city has started on one of its most distinctive seasons.

How we checked

The Seattle Christmas Market’s 2026 dates and hours come from the market’s own site, and Leavenworth’s Christmastown dates and lights from leavenworth.org, both read on September 26, 2026. The Seattle Marathon date and route were verified the same day. Mount Rainier’s chain requirement, gate times and current closures come from the National Park Service. Snoqualmie Falls’ hours, height, parking and trail description come from the operator’s site, including its published high-water account.

Viator ratings, review counts and from-prices were read from Viator’s Partner API on September 26, 2026; Viator’s figures combine Viator and Tripadvisor reviews, so they are not directly comparable with the GetYourGuide counts beside them. GetYourGuide ratings were re-sourced live from each listing’s structured data, and prices come from this site’s offers data, because GetYourGuide sets currency by the visitor’s location.

The climate, hotel occupancy, sunset and seasonal-service figures are the same ones used throughout the best time to visit Seattle’s attractions — NOAA 1991–2020 normals for Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and 2025 downtown hotel actuals.
